Since I left my corporate job in July 2014, I’ve been traveling the world pretty much solo. As a woman, traveling solo is one of the most transformative things you can do for yourself! Solo holidays are a ‘thing,’ and I am here to encourage you to do the same!
Often, I get the questions,

“What’s the best and quickest way to book everything I need for my single travel?”
“What are some of your best tips for my first solo travel trip?”
Welp. I’m going to answer all of those questions for ya sis! Did you know that according to Expedia’s Solo Travel Report, it says, “more than 60% of travelers will take a solo trip in the next yearā.
One of the best solo female travel destinations I can think of is the Bonneville Salt Flats right outside of Salt Lake City, Utah!
Okay. I know you may be thinking, “UTAH?!”
However, Utah is a beautiful state.
Salt Lake City is a live and bustling city with gorgeous scenery, nice people, and plenty of things to do and see. Not to mention the Bonneville Salt Flats are a spectacular sight to see!

TIP #1: Stop Wasting Time And Book Everything In A Package
Planning for solo traveling can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you find yourself attempting to figure it out on your own. These days I try to minimize the amount of time it takes me to plan solo travel trips.
That’s why I’ve gotten into Expedia and utilizing their platform! TIP #2: Not Sure Where To Go? Be Open to A ‘Deal’!
Often, I’m asked how I choose my solo travel destination. Truth isā¦ the destination chooses me! Being open to new sights, tastes, and experiences are what traveling solo is all about. And because most of us love a good deal, I suggest starting there!
When I clicked “Deal” on Expedia, Salt Lake City came up as a popular destination.
Salt Lake City?! I’LL TAKE IT!
When I did a bit of deeper digging, I saw there was soooo much to see and do in Salt Lake City, including heading to the Bonneville Salt Flats!
The Bonneville Salt Flats is such a unique thing to see, and experience and you don’t have to go all the way to Bolivia to take dope photos on salt flats!
About Bonneville Salt Flats:
The story has it that Lake Bonneville dried up many many years ago and left a 30,000-acre salt pan that is located west of Salt Lake City, Utah. The area is managed and protected by the Bureau of Land Management, which makes it $FREE.99! A #FunFact about the Salt Flats is that land speed records have been set here! Locals and visitors with love for speed call it the “Bonneville Speedway.”
Because the Bonneville Salt Flats are 1.5hrs outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, I suggest a rental car so you can explore on your own!

TIP #3: Find Stuff To Do + Meeting People
Solo travel is super eye-opening and transformative. But the point of picking dope solo travel destinations is to experiencing something new and different.
That’s why I suggest picking at least 3-5 things to do and being open to everything else.
FREE WALKING TOURS: For starters, ALWAYS start your search for things to do with this simple google search “free walking tours in [insert city name here].”
“THINGS TO DO”: If you’re looking for a ‘quick and dirty’ way to find what to do in the city you’re tripping to, consider Expedia’s “Things to Do” option. I didn’t realize that Antelope Canyon in Arizona wasn’t a long drive from Salt Lake City (I mean, 6.5hrs is relative for some you know?)! Or, that Wyoming is only a 1.5hr drive! I also found plenty of other cool tours that I could even book right through the Expedia app (use code: SOLOTRAVEL for 10% your booking)!

TIP #4: Be Safe Out There, Gal!
Here are a few of my top suggestions for staying safe while traveling solo:
Trust your instincts! This will always be my most excellent tip! Even if you feel a teeny-tiny inkling that something is off – trust that feeling immediately.
Yes, I know. Women should be able to dress how they want and when they want. And while I agree, the world may not. When traveling solo as a woman, it’s essential to minimize the amount of attention on you. The easiest way to do this is to dress modestly. See how the local women wear and immolate that.
Share your itinerary with your family and friends. Luckily, you can share your itinerary easily through the Expedia app.
Never give too much information. You’ll find that as you travel solo as a woman, people are super friendly. Sometimes you may engage in enlightening conversations and make new friends. One thing I’d say be cautious of is giving away too much information, including where you’re staying, how long you’ll be sticking around, and other personal details.
If going out and exploring the nightlife is your thing, then have fun! Just make sure that you don’t get too drunk, AND you never put your drink down or pick up a drink that you’ve put down. I’d also say watch your bartenders pour your drinks or only consume beverages in bottles.

I absolutely love solo travel. Great tips, especially the one about dressing as the local women do. As a modern Muslim woman, I detest nothing more than being told what to wear, but I can’t fight that fight while I’m traveling. There are other ways to do that.
